Alexander Pellekaan recently sent photos of the former post office in Alkmaar.
This municipal monument was built in 1877 by Cornelis Hendrik Peters - the later government architect and student of the renowned architect Pierre Cuypers - as the new home of the Alkmaar post office and the 'Cadastre and Mortgages office'. A building with a central function, which had to symbolize the prosperity of a city on the rise.
The post office moved in 1916, but to this day the stylish building, built in a neo-Gothic style, has lost none of its luster. The building has now become a home for Grand Hotel Alkmaar .
